Description

CLO 589Y – 1983 Series 3 109 Stage 1 V8 Station Wagon

In the mid to late 1970s, Land Rover was aware that it was falling behind the competition in the 4wd market. The standard Series 3 was under powered and out of date – Land Rover had nothing in the way of utility vehicles to compete with the growing Japanese offerings.

The Land Rover “Stage 1 V8” was a transitional vehicle built from 1979 to 1985, and was Land Rovers attempt to keep pace with the market.

It was offered in a choice of bodies, Pick up, Hard Top, Station Wagon and eventually hi capacity pick up.

Most of the first years production went to the export market.

This Land Rover V8 first came to our attention when we purchased it back in 2010.

It started life as a Russet Brown 12 seater county station wagon – believed to have been delivered new to Wadham Stringers and sold to Harrier films in NW London and was at one time used to ferry around the cast and crew on the 1986 film “Full Metal Jacket”.

By 2010 the Land Rover had undergone a full nut and bolt rebuild (photographic records included) – which included a conversion to a “Utility” 109 (rear load area kept clear for camping, and rear windows blanked off). The rebuild was meticulous and included a new galvanised chassis, galvanised bulkhead, galvanised “B” posts and freshly galvanised “Cappings” – along with many other galvanised items.

The Land Rover at this time was resprayed Limestone and a set of uber rare 1 Tonne IIB Forward control rims (569203 – 93mm deep dish) were fitted.

In 2015 the Land Rover had over £10,000 spent (bills available) to supply and fit a remanufactured RPi engineering stage 1 – 4.6 litre V8 engine with piper 270 cam, along with complete new ignition system, Edlebrock inlet manifold and Weber 500 carb kit. The gearbox was also stripped and reconditioned at the same time.

In 2017 – “CLO” returned to us again, and this time, at the request of the new owner, it was stripped and returned to original “Station Wagon” specification and the original colour of Russet Brown.

Offered today with just 26,000 miles covered since complete rebuild prior to 2010
